Tenaris Tamsa

During the summer of 2026, I had the opportunity to join Tenaris Tamsa as a recipient of the AIST Foundation Steel Intern Scholarship, where I developed the project titled “Evaluation of Machining Variables on Charpy V-Notch Impact Test Results of Pipeline Steels” as part of the research and development (R&D) team.

The objective of this project was to analyze and document the effect of different machining process variables on mechanical testing results, with the goal of supporting quality assurance and continuous improvement for steel products used in demanding applications. The development of this project included specimen preparation, dimensional verification, laboratory testing, data collection, and analysis of the results. Beyond the technical activities, I gained a broader understanding of the complete manufacturing route of pipeline steels, including the role of chemical composition, heat treatment conditions, microstructural evolution, and their connection to mechanical properties. This knowledge allowed me to better interpret how processing steps affect the final behavior of the material. The project also provided valuable insight into the importance of robust testing practices and compliance with applicable industry standards.

What made this experience truly transformative was becoming part of the R&D team at Tenaris Tamsa from the very first day. I never felt alone; although the internship involved significant technical challenges, I always had the support of a team willing to share their knowledge and experience. Beyond working in an environment where safety is a non-negotiable value, I had the opportunity to interact with trainees, operators, researchers with different levels of expertise, and colleagues from other Tenaris plants. Each conversation represented a valuable learning opportunity and broadened my perspective on the challenges and projects currently driving innovation within the steel industry.

I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to complete this internship, as it allowed me to gain firsthand insight into the steel industry and apply the knowledge acquired in the classroom to a project with real industrial impact. This experience strengthened my technical skills, as well as my ability to collaborate, communicate results, and approach engineering challenges. Above all, it reaffirmed my passion for materials engineering and the steel industry. I conclude this experience with new knowledge, a much broader perspective of my profession, and a heart full of motivation to continue growing as an engineer and contribute to the advancement of the steel industry.
