AIST Foundation Steel Intern Scholarships
Application
Applications will be accepted for the 2027-2028 academic year from now through 5 October 2026.
Qualifying Criteria
- Students studying engineering or engineering technology disciplines, in addition to computer science, data science, environmental/sustainability science, and safety or industrial safety program
- Applications will be accepted from university sophomore and junior applicants, and university seniors planning to attend their first year of graduate school.
- Applicant must be enrolled full-time in a four-year undergraduate (minimum of 12 credits) or graduate program (minimum of 8 credits) at an accredited North American university. At the time of application (in October 2026), I am in year 2-3 of a 4-year undergraduate program, or 2-4 of a 5-year undergraduate program, or an undergraduate student entering the final year and planning to enter year 1 of graduate school program. An applicant working full-time does not qualify. Applicants must have a minimum of one semester remaining after the 2027 summer internship.
- Applicant should have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
- Application, essay and recommendation letter should express a strong interest in the iron and steel industry.
- Applicant must be a citizen of an USMCA country (USA, Canada, Mexico)
- Applicant must be available, willing and able to relocate for the summer internship.
- Applicant should have a strong interest in the iron and steel industry.
- While not required, student membership to AIST through the Material Advantage Student Program, will enhance the application.
Required Documents
All application documents must be submitted in English.
The following documents must be submitted uploaded in the application linked above, in PDF, unprotected, format:
- Resume – Including current academic information, work, extra-curricular activities and leadership positions including student membership to AIST through the Material Advantage Student Program, if applicable. Resume must be submitted in pdf format.
- Essay - not to exceed two pages in length, citing professional goals, explaining why the student is interested in a career in the steel industry, and discussing how your skills could be applied to enhance the industry.
- Recommendation Letter(s) - A minimum of one letter is required, with a maximum of five letters being accepted. The letter(s) should be written by a professional familiar with the student’s work and/or interests. Letters written by a representative of a steel-related company and/or a discipline-related professor will be given more weight in the scoring process. To obtain the highest score, applicants should submit a letter from both a representative of a steel-related company and a discipline-related professor. Letters must be submitted by the author directly to Courtney Young at AIST and direct to “The AIST Foundation Scholarship Committee.”
- Transcript - A current academic transcript or other documentation of academic standing and performance from a university. Official or Unofficial transcripts are accepted and must include the university and applicant name.
All scholarships and grants are awarded in accordance with AIST Foundation’s policies, which may be amended from time to time, and are subject to the approval of the Board of Trustees. Scholarships and grants are awarded subject to availability and funding and AIST Foundation reserves the right to withdraw or amend any listed scholarship or grant without prior notification. Scholarships and grants may be suspended or revoked at any time at the Board’s discretion. In no event shall the AIST Foundation or the Board of Trustees be liable for any claim or cost associated with suspending or revoking any scholarship or grant. All decisions by the Board shall be final and may not be appealed.
