Gina McKinney

As a recipient of the Don B. Daily Safety Steel Intern Scholarship, I was given the opportunity to complete an internship at Steel Dynamics Inc. (SDI) – Flat Roll Group Butler Division. As an intern in the safety department, I was exposed to many different areas and aspects of the steelmaking process.

Logan Bader

As an intern at Nucor Steel in Memphis, Tenn., USA, this summer, I had the opportunity to dive into the process of making steel in the meltshop, specifically focusing on the caster. While at the caster, my focus was on evaluating the cost savings, change of steel properties and improvement of cleanliness associated with possible process changes.

Past Meeting

The AIST Globe-Trotters Member Chapter held its 2012 annual meeting in Jacksonville, Fla., on 8–11 September. This year’s meeting had more than 225 attendees. The program kicked off Sunday morning with two operator roundtable discussions (meltshop and rolling), followed by two operator-supplier roundtable discussions in the afternoon (meltshop and rolling). On Monday, 10 September, the attendees took a tour of Gerdau Jacksonville, with a majority returning to a beautiful day at the annual golf outing, held at St. Johns Golf Club. The 2012 Globe-Trotters meeting concluded on Tuesday morning, 11 September, with technical sessions on various topics in both meltshop and rolling mill technology. The meeting culminated with a dinner Tuesday evening and an informative talk given by Philip Bell, director — external communications, Gerdau North America. Also during the dinner, the Globe-Trotters announced their four scholarship winners for 2012: Ryne Somers, Jonathan Leffew, Jordyn Reed and Olivia King. An additional scholarship was given in honor of Stuart Gray to Taylor Bott. The 2013 Globe-Trotters annual meeting will be held in New Orleans, La., with the host mill being ArcelorMittal La Place.

Detroit

In 1938, the AISE Detroit Section became the 6th district section of Association of Iron and Steel Engineers (AISE). The section's first official meeting and installation of officers took place on 1 June 1938 in the Detroit Edison Auditorium. Julius A. Clauss, national president, 1940, then chief engineer of Great Lakes Steel Corp. and founder of the section, presided. The first chairman was Loyal R. Milburn, Great Lakes Steel Corp. Mr. Milburn served from 1938-1940. James L Laidlaw, The Algoma Steel Corp. Ltd., chairman 1965-1966 and Robert McBride, National Steel Corp., also served as national presidents. The Iron and Steel Society Detroit Local Section was formed in 1975. In 2004, with the merger of AISE and ISS, the Detroit sections were combined to form the AIST Detroit Member Chapter. The Detroit Member Chapter includes Michigan and parts of Northwestern Ohio.

Faculty Grants & Programs

The AIST Foundation awards grants to North American universities on an annual basis to increase the number of engineering faculty with a vested interest in the iron and steel industry, and to increase the number of engineering students electing to pursue careers in the iron and steel industry.

Sustainable Technologies for Steel Manufacturing Grant

This grant was established to challenge university teams from engineering, scientific and mathematical departments at North American universities to submit proposals for grant funding in the theme area of sustainable technologies for steel manufacturing, including decarbonization, CO2 reduction and carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), among other related technologies.

AIST Foundation Steel Professor

The AIST Foundation Steel Professor is open to professors who have received and have successfully completed three years of the Kent D. Peaslee Junior Faculty Award to maintain a formal link to our past recipients and their university to encourage continued engagement with the steel industry.

MENA

The AIST Middle East North Africa (MENA) Member Chapter was formalized as AIST’s 22nd Member Chapter by the board of directors on Thursday, 1 July 2021 at AISTech 2021 in Nashville, Tenn., USA. During the show, the AIST Board of Directors met and approved the association’s 22nd Member Chapter, the Middle East/North Africa (MENA) Chapter. The approval is the capstone of a multi-year effort to create a group for steel professionals in Middle Eastern and North African countries.

Local Member Chapters

Chapter History

The Association of Iron and Steel Engineers (AISE) Birmingham District Section was formed in 1919. When the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers' (AISE) and the Iron and Steel Society (ISS) merged in 2004, the AISE Birmingham District Section became the AIST Birmingham Member Chapter. The AIST Birmingham Member Chapter includes members from both Alabama and Mississippi.
