AIST Foundation Steel Intern Scholarship - Smith Graduate  (AIME)

Abigail L. Clark

This summer, I had the opportunity to intern at Nucor Steel–Louisiana as a process engineering intern. The specific location I worked at was a direct reduced iron (DRI) plant that plays a critical role in Nucor’s steelmaking supply chain. I worked alongside experienced engineers on a variety of projects aimed at improving efficiency and product quality. I assisted with lab work for process monitoring and helped prepare projects for the plant’s annual shutdown.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the internship was Nucor’s unmatched team dynamic. I loved getting to meet and work with so many people across departments, and I always felt encouraged to ask questions and contribute. This internship also gave me a new perspective on the
materials industry. While my previous experiences focused more on steelmaking and failure analysis, working in ironmaking introduced me to a more proactive, process-driven approach. I saw how engineers work continuously to ensure that the process and operations run smoothly and efficiently, rather than focusing on an end-product. I had a very hands-on approach to projects by assisting with trials, running samples in the lab, and helping test new hand-held pieces of equipment.

As I continue my accelerated M.Sc. in materials science and engineering, I’m grateful for the mentorship and exposure I received at Nucor. This experience has deepened my understanding of the industry and strengthened my passion for metallurgy.
