Relative to air-based combustion, oxy-fuel has been shown to offer the potential for increased thermal efficiency and decreased emissions. However, in order to achieve mid- and long-term decarbonization targets, low-carbon fuels will need to replace fossil sources. Green hydrogen (H2) and green ammonia (NH3) are two potential low-carbon fuels that are being considered to enable this transition. This webinar will provide an overview of the fundamentals as well as practical steelmaking experience in the combustion of hydrogen and ammonia.

Chrome-Free Passivation of Tinplate for Packaging (CFPA)

Tinplate passivation is the process by which the growth of tin oxide is controlled on tinplate. Hexavalent chromium is used globally for the passivation of steel for tinplate packaging. Control is necessary because continued growth of an oxide layer could impair lacquer adhesion and affect welding. The continued use of hexavalent chromium substances in the manufacture of Electrolytic Tinplate (ETP) is subject to a time-limited authorization permit in the European Union and the U.K. These substances have been identified as Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) resulting in their inclusion in REACH Annex XIV (Authorization list). This presentation outlines a CFPA update discusses technical challenges faced during conversion of hexavalent chromium to chrome-free passivation.

Automated Inclusion Analysis

This webinar will consist of three presentations on state-of-the-art methods in automated inclusion analysis. Automated analyses using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and composition measurement by energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) provide a wealth of information about inclusion populations in steel. The first presentation will detail methods used to segment SEM/EDS data from inclusions that contain more than one phase. The second will review the equipment and workflow for automated analyses using a desktop SEM. The final presentation will focus on the automated characterization of nanometer-sized precipitates using automated transmission electron microscopy and EDS.

Impact of Lip Adjustment on Wiping Efficiency

The impact of the lip shape and adjustment is addressed by 2D computational fluid dynamics modeling. The effect on the coating weight and the nitrogen dilution by ambiance is also studied. It is shown that the shape of the tip has a significant effect of the behavior of the air jet in atmosphere. Similarly, the quality of the channel (convergent, divergent or parallel) impacts both the coating weight and the dilution of nitrogen. This means that the quality of the maintenance in an industrial line is as important as the initial design in order to ensure efficient wiping.

One Heat Pot Balance to Check Entry Strip Temperature

Accurate Strip Temperature Measurement for Continuous Annealing and Hot-Dip Coating Lines

Strip temperature is perhaps the most critical parameter for the assurance of a quality product and optimal line productivity, and yet, due to the complexity of the process, it is one of the most challenging measurements to make accurately. This webinar will review the theory of infrared pyrometers and those issues that influence the accuracy of measurement for the continuous annealing line and for zinc-coated steel strip. Consideration will be given to the non-greybody emissivity variation of steel strip, the multi-reflective roller wedge measurement technique, and the direct view measurement technique with and without a cooled viewing tube. Included will be the special considerations associated with the measure of Generation 3 advanced high-strength steel alloys. Measurement points to be discussed include the welder, heating zone, soaking zone, cooling zone, snout, galvanneal furnace, APC cooling tower, temper mill, acrylic curing oven and passivation drying oven. Materials covered include cold-rolled steel, hot-rolled steel, galvanneal, galvanize, galvalume, aluminize and ZAM.

Use of Laser Scanning and 3D Models for Improved Project Results in Brownfield Facilities

Interactions Between Dry Vibratable Tundish Linings and Steel Melts

Interactions between a tundish working lining and molten steel were investigated using industrial samples and laboratory testing. A periclase-based dry vibrational lining containing 30 wt.% olivine was sampled from a production facility and examined. Cathodoluminescence imaging, secondary electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction analysis were performed to characterize the interactions. An experiment was developed to replicate the conditions found in a production tundish on the laboratory scale. Results comparing interactions observed in the laboratory lining tests and commercial samples for the lining material are presented and discussed.

Scale Formation on 430 Stainless Steel in a Simulated Slab Combustion Reheat Furnace Atmosphere

Scale formed during slab reheating can be difficult to remove by high-pressure descaling, having a negative impact hot roll surface quality. A large-capacity thermogravimetric apparatus that replicates the combustion atmosphere and temperature in a slab reheat furnace was used to investigate scale formation on 430 stainless steel. Effects of reheating parameters (temperature, time and atmosphere) on oxidation kinetics were investigated. Oxidized samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction to document the microstructure and morphology of scale. Mechanisms for the formation of multi-layered oxide structures that complicate oxidation kinetics and scale removal are discussed.

In 2016, DUMA-BANDZINK and EMG Automation joined engineering forces to develop a fully integrated unit consisting of a JetPro Air Knife and an eMASS strip stabilization system. Combining the advancements and innovations of both companies’ equipment, the integrated solution has evolved with great success with the development of future generation designs currently being realized. Together nine units have been installed since 2016 with a high operating customer approval rating. Two additional projects currently slated for installation in Germany (2020/2021) are presently being constructed for two high-output automotive exposed grade lines. Post-rolling cooling of hot-rolled strips of advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) grades is of the utmost importance for producing a material with desirable properties. Such cooling includes two stages: water cooling on the runout table of the hot strip mill and subsequent air cooling of the coil after removing it from the coiler mandrel. The industry practice shows that some AHSS grades do not undergo phase transformation on the runout table. Thus, the final phase composition and properties are formed during air cooling. The current study discusses a method of predicting the phase transformation and mechanical properties of the coiled material.

Hot Rolling Coil Technology Development For Pipes Intended For Extraction And Transportation Of Petroleum Products

A technology has been developed for the production of low-carbon and microalloyed steel for the production of strips in order to manufacture medium-diameter pipes for the extraction and transportation of petroleum products, and it allows stable corrosion properties to be obtained, according to the NACE TM 0284 technique, in a hot-rolled condition from slab with thickness of more than 200 mm, which is very difficult in terms of ensuring the availability of inclusions and heterogeneity in the structure. The obtained results allowed, with minimum costs, to prepare the previously developed integrated computer model (STAN 2000) for calculating the structure and mechanical properties.

Machine Learning Applications for Process Control and Optimization in Steelmaking

As part of Tenova’s digital transformation, the digital team at Tenova has worked closely with various business units to identify opportunities for application of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques where they could bring value to customers in the steel industry. This paper discusses some of these initiatives applied to the control and optimization in steel production plants:

  • Application of machine learning (ML) to data from a basic oxygen furnace.

  • Application of ML to control cassette penetration and strip tension in a tension leveler machine.

  • Application of convolutional neural networks for automatic classification of scrap material in a steel plant.

  • Application of ML to predict metallization and carbon content in a direct reduction plant.

  • Model to predict NOx emissions in a walking beam furnace.
