AIST Presents Gold Reliability Achievement Award to NLMK Indiana for EAF Upgrade With Primetals Technologies
04/22/2026 - AIST presented the Gold Reliability Achievement Award to NLMK Indiana in honor of its recent electric arc furnace (EAF) upgrade with Primetals Technologies solutions at its facility in Portage, Ind., USA.
The companies said the purpose of the modernization was to increase safety and simplify maintenance. Primetals Technologies developed a single-point roof lifting system and an integrated gantry for the project. The modernization was completed during a 6-week shutdown.
Upon implementation, operators no longer need to physically access the furnace roof when disconnecting chains for maintenance. Maintenance hours have also decreased while productivity has increased; the new equipment allows for a faster delta replacement process.
The Reliability Achievement Award is presented at gold, silver and bronze levels to organizations and individuals who develop, apply and prove new practices, policies or procedures that improve iron- and steelmaking reliability in North America.
