Algoma Steel Announces First Production on Second EAF
11/03/2026 - Algoma Steel announced it has produced the first steel on the new second electric arc furnace (EAF) at its Canadian plant.
The company said this brings its conversion from blast furnace steelmaking closer to completion. The second EAF had its first heat in early October and will contribute to shipments in the fourth quarter while the first is operating around the clock.
Together, the EAFs are estimated to produce about 3.7 million metric tons of crude steel annually with CO2 emissions cut by 70%.
Algoma Steel is focusing on plate sales in Canada amidst lowered steel shipments, a power outage and ongoing issues with U.S. tariffs, the company said.
