Algoma Steel Resumes EAF Production, LSP Turbine Remains Unavailable
09/03/2026 - Algoma Steel Group Inc. announced that it has enacted interim operating arrangements to resume electric arc furnace (EAF) production while the affected Lake Superior Power (LSP) turbine remains out of service.
The company said it is working closely with the Independent Electricity System Operator for the interim arrangements which maintain sustained production, including through planned work on the provincial electricity system.
Algoma is looking into various alternatives to restore full LSP generating capacity as soon as possible. That includes the repair and return to service of the affected turbine and getting a replacement turbine. It is working with GE Vernova and others to find alternatives and determine the most effective and timely way to restore capacity, the company said.
The company continues to assess the impact on production and shipments while looking into their options.
