Algoma to Utilize Danieli Digimelter in Transition From BF to EAF Steelmaking
12/03/2021 - The Canadian steel producer selected Danieli as its sole technology supplier in the company’s transition from integrated to electric steelmaking, according to a press release from Danieli.
Danieli’s Digimelter melting technology, which uses renewable energy, will allow Algoma to realize a 70% reduction in carbon emissions, according to Danieli.
The new green steel shop, which will feature two 250-metric-ton electric arc furnaces, will be installed at the company’s facility in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., Canada, and will have a design capacity of 3.7 million tons.
Danieli’s scope of supply will also include a twin-tank vacuum degasser with oxygen-blowing facility, two new offgas treatment plants and a recirculating water treatment plant, as well as an automated scrap system.
The facility is expected to be operational in 2024.
