ArcelorMittal Finalizes HBI Plant Purchase
07/07/2022 - ArcelorMittal has completed its acquisition of a majority stake in a Texas hot briquetted iron (HBI) plant, the company reports.
In a statement, ArcelorMittal said it now holds an 80% share in voestalpine’s Corpus Christi, Texas, USA, facility. The plant has a capacity of 2 million tons.
voestalpine is retaining a 20% share in the facility and will continue to receive some HBI from it under a long-term off-take agreement. However, ArcelorMittal said most of the off-take will be delivered to third parties under existing supply contracts and to
ArcelorMittal facilities, including AM/NS Calvert in Alabama.
“ArcelorMittal intends to lead the decarbonization of the global steel industry,” the company said. “The transaction enhances ArcelorMittal’s ability to produce the high-quality input materials required for low-carbon emissions steelmaking and reinforces the company’s position as a world leader in DRI production,” it added.
