The ArcelorMittal Brazil Foundation focuses many of its social programs on education, believing that is one of the most effective ways to achieve sustainable communities.
Between August and November 2010, an initiative was carried out with the support of the Foundation together with Piracicaba's Offices of Cultural Action and Education. The Foundation in Brazil sponsored the program "Passa Balaio Trançado de Sonhos" (“Let's pass around a dream-woven straw basket”), which aims to strengthen educators' storytelling abilities as a way to foster classroom interest in child reading.
Apart from training 60 educators in the art of storytelling, the project includes the donation of the book "Caju" to approximately 2000 students from schools in Piacicaba and 60 baskets with 20 books to the teachers who attended the program.
Educator Ana Paula Arruda, who teaches in a kindergarten, is one of the beneficiaries of the program: "Before telling stories, our work was more focused on reading books,” she explained. “In order to tell a story, we have to pay attention to other things like our movements and sounds. It is a more interactive way of teaching which makes children more interested. They learn how to listen respectfully and many times end up enjoying telling stories to their families."
