ArcelorMittal Opens Kindergarten in Dabrowa Górnicza

A new kindergarten built by ArcelorMittal Poland opened last week in Dąbrowa Górnicza. The facility has room for 100 children of employees of the company and subsidiaries; children of persons unrelated to the company will also be able to attend it subject to availability. Construction took eight months and the costs amounted to PLN 5 m.

The company plans to open another kindergarten in 2012 in Kraków.

The kindergarten is in response to the initiative of The Women Council functioning at ArcelorMittal Poland since 2008, which represents the interests and answers the needs of women employed at the company’s units in Poland. The Council consists of representatives of H&S, Legal, HR and Communication Departments. To see if there was a need for such a facility, a survey was conducted among employees who have preschool children; 90% of respondents confirmed that they would welcome this form of childcare.

Parents whose children are enrolled in the kindergarten will pay no more than 25% of the actual cost incurred for the services, thanks to partial support from the City of Dąbrowa Górnicza and ArcelorMittal Poland’s financial contribution, which will be covered by the Employee Benefit Fund.

Jadwiga Kołkowska, Director at External Relations, Environment and Special Projects Office, was the project coordinator. She is also in charge of the kindergarten project in Kraków.

“The initiative of creating company kindergartens is a reflection of one of the pillars of our Corporate Responsibility strategy—Investing in our People. We make efforts to provide them with work and life comfort, which is particularly important in case of parents with preschool children,” said Sanjay Samaddar, CEO and BOD Chairman at ArcelorMittal Poland. “We also believe this is a good way to support the difficult demographic situation in Poland, because top-class facilities like these, right next to the place of work, will allow parents to work at peace, knowing that their children are happy in excellent surroundings not far from their place of work.”
