ArcelorMittal Supports Special Economic Zone in Krakow

11/12/2010 - A letter of intent concerning the evaluation of possibilities for creating a special economic zone in Krakow’s Nowa Huta District was recently signed by the Malopolska Region’s Governor, the Małopolska Agency for Regional Development, and the region’s biggest investor, ArcelorMittal Poland, owner of a part of the land to be dedicated to the creation of the zone.

A letter of intent concerning the evaluation of possibilities for creating a special economic zone in Krakow’s Nowa Huta District was recently signed by Malopolska Region’s Governor, Małopolska Agency for Regional Development, and the region’s biggest investor, ArcelorMittal Poland, owner of a part of the land to be dedicated to the creation of the zone.
 
The economic zone would be on an area of land that is almost 500 ha. Taxation facilities and privileges for investors, economical and infrastructural development of the region, as well as job creation are among the potential benefits from pursuing the concept, according to ArcelorMittal.
 
In its first stage the plan assumes the merger of fragmented and unused plots in the eastern part of Nowa Huta, which belong to Agency for Regional Development Kraków-Wschód Sp. z o.o., the Krakow community, and the Krakow Unit of ArcelorMittal Poland. Following that step, the area will be divided into plots of 2 to 10 ha and offered to investors. The zone will be equipped with complete road, electricity, gas, sewage, and water supply infrastructure.
 
The signatories from ArcelorMittal Poland were Sanjay Samaddar, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors, and Surojit Ghosh, CFO and Board Member.
  
“As the biggest investor in the region, we are taking a keen interest in the economical and infrastructural development of Malopolska,” said Samaddar. “A creation of the special economic zone will certainly result not only in the inflow of capital and new investments to Nowa Huta but will be also beneficial for such investors like ArcelorMittal Poland, already operating in this area. Krakow has always been and will remain a crucial part of our development strategy in Poland.”
 
“Ultimately, we plan to connect the special economic zone in Nowa Huta with a similar area in Niepolomice. It will allow us to enhance attractiveness of Malopolska Region for further investments,” said Governor Stanislaw Kracik.
