Automation Systems Updated by SMS group for thyssenkrupp Steel Europe
12/15/2025 - Coiler area automation systems at thyssenkrupp Steel Europe’s hot strip mill No. 1 in Duisburg, Germany, have been upgraded by SMS group, the equipment supplier announced.
The mill produces carbon steel flat products in a variety of grades and dimensions. SMS group said the project included updating the level 1 automation and human machine interface (HMI) systems for three downcoilers at the mill. Upgrades included implementing the technological control system and HMI enhancements.
Features of the modernization include SMS group’s X-Pact® ProBAS software platform, X-Pact embedded controllers, an EtherCAT real-time Ethernet network, a PROFIBUS remote I/O system and visualization with ergonomic faceplates.
The project is the most recent in a series of modernizations for the Duisburg facility by SMS group.
