Bajaj Named Managing Director at SAIL Plant
11/06/2009 - Punkaj Kumar Bajaj takes over as the new Managing Director of SAIL, Durgapur Steel Plant, effective November 1. He replaces V. Shyamsundar.
Punkaj Kumar Bajaj has taken over as the new Managing Director of SAIL, Durgapur Steel Plant, effective November 1. Before replacing V. Shyamsundar as Managing Director, Bajaj was Executive Director, Operations and In-charge, Special Steels at SAIL Corporate Office.
A Metallurgical Engineer from the University of Rajasthan, Bajaj started with SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant in 1974, working in several departments such as Production Planning and Control, Projects and Modernization. After a stint in the Corporate Office, Bajaj moved to Bhilai Steel Plant as Assistant General Manager, In-charge, PPC. He was promoted as General Manager in 2001 and worked as Head of Marketing and Strategic Planning.

Bajaj later took over as General Manager In-charge, Services before assuming the position of Executive Director, Project Implementation, BSP, in 2005. In 2007, Bajaj moved to the Corporate Office again and worked in Chairman’s Secretariat and later as Executive Director, Operations and In-charge Special Steels.
The company says that Bajaj’s focus on operational efficiency and value-added special steels has played an important role in recasting SAIL’s product portfolio in favor of special steels that have higher net sales realization and provide a competitive advantage in a recessionary steel market.
