Baosteel Ranked 3rd in List of World-Class Steel Enterprises

Baosteel Group was ranked third in a list of 2009 world-class steel enterprises recently published by World Steel Dynamics (WSD).

WSD's ranking of world-class steel enterprises evaluates corporations according to their prospective administration, scope, and degree of integration among various sectors from raw material to downstream businesses. Steel enterprises receive scores based on indicators such as volume of production, scope, possibility for increasing production, position in markets of high growth potential and sophistication, technological innovation, environment and safety, pricing ability, pension obligation, profitability, and company balance sheet.

Thirty-two companies were selected for this year’s list of world-class steel enterprises. The five leading enterprises according to weighted mean scores were Severstal Steel Corp., Posco, Baosteel, Arcelor Mittal, and Novolipetsk Steel, Russia. This year was Severstal Steel’s third consecutive year to be ranked as No. 1.

Baosteel noted the inclusion of several other Chinese producers on this year’s list, including Anben Iron and Steel Group (19th), Ma Steel (26th), Wisco (29th) and Shagang Group (31st). Production of all the Chinese corporations in the list represents 25% of total steel production in China.
