Baosteel Receives World’s Thickest Ultrathick Slab Caster From Primetals Technologies
02/12/2026 - Primetals Technologies announced it has delivered a new two-stand record-breaking ultrathick slab caster, Caster No. 5, to Baosteel Zhanjiang Iron and Steel’s Zhanjiang plant in Guangdong Province, China.
The companies said Caster No. 5 was designed for slabs up to 2,700 mm wide and 460 mm thick. Its Single Roll DynaGap segments have a load capacity of 5,000 kilonewtons per roll and the thickness can be reduced during casting. It has an estimated annual capacity of 3.5 million metric tons annually.
Primetals Technologies said it provided engineering, supply of main mechanical and electrical equipment, level 1 and level 2 automation systems, and digital solutions for the caster. It features a software solution which determines the ideal roll geometry to prevent mold fluctuations at the design stage and reduce them by about 50%.
This collaboration represents the fifth slab caster Primetals Technologies has provided for the Zhanjiang plant.
