Baosteel to Supply Steel Wire for World’s Largest-Span Suspension Bridge

Baosteel recently won its bid to supply galvanized steel wire to the three-tower, two-span suspension Jiangsu Taizhou Yangtze River Road Bridge, which is to have the largest span in the world.

Baosteel will supply nearly 20,000 tonnes of products for the project, where they will be used as all the cable ropes for the bridge. Baosteel said the supply contract is a result of Baosteel's active efforts to exploit key engineering markets in the face of grim market situation.

Located in the lower reaches of Yangtze River, Taizhou Yangtze River Road Bridge will be built at a total investment of RMB 9.37 billion yuan. The bridge will connect Taizhou, Yangzhong and Changzhou, and is a key river crossing passage project in the "5 longitudinal, 9 lateral and 5 interconnecting" expressway network of Jiangsu Province.

Construction of the bridge is of great significance for development of the region; it will also help to improve the riverside economy and shipping conditions in general. The approximately 62 km long bridge will include a 7-km main bridge and a 1080-meter mail span. Its design will feature a three-tower suspension bridge with an innovative bridge technology. The design requires that supplier providing the material for the main span cable rope must have the experience to supply the cable rope for the single span of over 1000 meters.

Prior to this project, Baosteel's galvanized steel wire has been successfully applied in the Xihoumen suspension bridge in the Zhoushan Islands, whose span is the largest in China and the second-largest in the world.
