Battery B3 Commissioned at ZKS

A celebration was recently held to mark the commissioning of the new Battery B3 at Zentralkokerei Saar GmbH (ZKS), the joint coking-plant operating subsidiary of AG der Dillinger Hüttenwerke and Saarstahl AG.

Guests included Franz-Josef Berg, mayor of the City of Dillingen; members of the supervisory and management boards of the two shareholders; the CEO of ZKS; numerous ZKS employees; and representatives of many of the suppliers and contractors working on the project.

Construction of the new battery, consisting of 50 coke-ovens that feature the latest environmental-protection technology, is a significant element in the overall modernization program begun in 2007. Total investments are around 220 million euro.

Pollution-prevention technologies installed in Battery B3 have included independent control of pressure in each individual coke oven chamber, a new system of charging-gas capture and transfer, and a new bag-filter installation. The byproducts plant has also been overhauled and all technology modernized to meet the latest standards.

Completion of the new Battery B3 is to be followed by the refurbishing of one of the existing coke-oven batteries (B1). Already shut down, this battery will now be completely rebuilt to the same standards as Battery B3. Once Battery B1 has been recommissioned, the second existing battery, B2, will be taken out of service.

ZKS's original production capacity of about 1.3 million tonnes of coke annually is scheduled to be restored by late 2011 or early 2012.
