BENTELER Taps SMS group For Stretch-Reducing Mill Upgrade

The companies said they replaced the computer-aided rolling technology application (CARTA®) automation system with SMS group’s next-generation CARTAneo SRM technology with updated crop end control and wall thickness control modules. The system uses real-time measurement data to make tighter tolerances, enhance wall thickness accuracy and improve yield. The upgrade includes a service package including remote maintenance, troubleshooting, software updates and custom customizations.

The new system runs in a virtual server based on SMS’s X Pact® technology to reduce the risk of system failure, eliminate single-point hardware dependencies and safeguard maintainability with an open-source operating system and database components.

During the update, they also redesigned the SRM motor-control strategy, reducing load peaks on the drives, minimizing unnecessary load cycles, improving coordination with the downstream flying saw and allowing for better process stability at higher speeds.

The upgrade took place during BENTELER’s scheduled annual shutdown to prevent unplanned downtimes. SMS group said it performed regular tests, updates and other optimizations while production continued.
