BlueScope Browsing for Potential U.S. Cold Rolling Opportunities
08/21/2025 - North Star BlueScope Steel’s corporate parent is thinking about buying, rather than building, new sheet processing capabilities, chief executive officer Mark Vassella told The Wall Street Journal during an interview.
Vassella spoke with The Journal about his company’s U.S. strategy in the face of tariffs and its decision earlier this year to postpone a US$1.2 billion investment in a Midwest cold mill and coating facility.
“Now that Nippon Steel and U. S. Steel have settled, we’re just thinking about whether there’s any implications or opportunities that might come out of that would affect our decision,” Vassella told The Journal. “For example, are there assets that Nippon Steel might not want? They’re the things that we’re thinking through.”
