Construction Underway for MMK Plate Mill and Slab Caster

Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel (MMK), Russia, recently announced commencement of construction for its new 5000-mm plate mill and continuous slab caster.
 
The new facility will allow MMK to produce high-margin rolled plate up to 4850-mm wide for the oil and gas, ship construction, bridge building and machine industry sectors. Such products are particularly important for manufacturers of large diameter pipes. The plate mill will have a capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per year, including 0.3 million tonnes of heat treated plate.
 
According to Viktor Rashnikov, Chairman of the OJSC MMK Board of Directors, the 5000-mm plate mill construction is being implemented in terms second to none in the world, and will be completed in less than three years.
 
MMK signed a contract with equipment manufacturer SMS-Demag (Germany) in 2006 for the delivery of the plate mill and continuous slab caster. According to the company, foundation work and frame building of a shop have been completed, and roofing and facing works are now in progress. The Plate Mill heating furnaces are also currently being installed.

Start-up of the new facilities is scheduled for mid-2009.


The Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works OJSC (MMK) is among the world’s largest steel producers and one of the leaders of Russia’s steel industry. The company is a large steel producing complex encompassing the entire production chain, from preparation of iron ore to downstream processing of rolled steel. MMK turns out a broad range of steel products with a predominant share of value-added goods.

In 2007 the company produced 13.3 million tonnes of crude steel, and 12.2 million tonnes of commercial products. Sales under US GAAP amounted to USD 8.2 billion, with net profit standing at USD 1.8 billion.
