Danieli to Upgrade Bar and Rod Mill at SN Longos Seixal

SN Longos Seixal, Portugal, awarded Danieli a contract to upgrade its 150 tonne/hour bar and wire rod mill in Seixal. Objectives for the major upgrade include extending the present product range, enhancing product quality, and increasing plant efficiency.

The upgrade will include modernization of the existing plant as well as the introduction of latest-generation equipment and advanced technology for production of straight bars and bar-in-coils.

Specifically, Danieli will replace the present cooling bed and services with a new high-speed straight-bar production outlet. Comprising a 4-stand pre-finishing mill and two 6-pass twist-free finishing blocks, the outlet will be capable of producing 8 to 40-mm diameter rebars on two strands, at speeds of up to 50 meters/second. Bar delivery onto the new cooling bed will be made through a high-speed double-twin channel system.

Danieli will also install a new spooler line for production of on-line heat-treated 8- to 25-mm diameter rebars, regularly winded in ultra-compact coils, weighing 2.8 tonnes. This new line will make SN Longos first in Portugal to produce spooled rebar in coils, enlarging its present market share.

The upgrade will also include the installation of a new twist-free, single-strand roughing mill for rolling larger-size, heavier billets.

Danieli Automation will supply all electricals and the advanced automation system.

The plant upgrade will be carried out in stages according to an optimized program developed by Danieli and SN Longos Seixal. The new straight bar production outlet will be started up first, in the second quarter of 2008. The spooler line and the new rougher will start up six and 12 months later,  respectively.

SN Longos Seixal is part of Spain’s Megasa Group.
