Electric Process Gas Heater to be Supplied by Kanthal and Danieli
05/27/2025 - Kanthal and Danieli will install Kanthal’s first pilot-scale electric process gas heater for commercial use at Emsteel’s direct reduced iron (DRI) plant in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Kanthal said the heater is based on its Prothal® DH technology. The technology has been developed and tested by the company and is now being prepared for commercialization together with their strategic partner Danieli. They estimate it has the potential to completely remove CO2 emissions from the heating process while enhancing energy efficiency.
“We’re pleased to see the technology that we have developed now being implemented in an end-user production setting. To enable industrial decarbonization, electric preheating of gas will become a significantly important application in the next few years, and we are getting ready to meet that demand.” said Simon Lile, president business unit heating systems at Kanthal.
The Emsteel plant produces long products such as heavy sections, bars and wire rods. They said the 1-MW-size heater will make the low-emission plant more environmentally friendly.
The heater is scheduled for delivery in early 2026, the companies said.
