Experts Coordinate Efforts to Investigate U. S. Steel Clairton Coke Plant Accident

In a press release from U. S. Steel, the preliminary indications suggest the explosion happened when flushing a gas valve in preparation for planned maintenance. A buildup of pressure within the valve caused it to fail, allowing coke oven gas to escape into the area, which later ignited upon contact with an ignition source.

The investigation remains in its early stages. The company said more information will be released as it becomes available.
