Fincantieri Celebrates Steel Cutting for Second FREMM EVO Frigate
07/24/2026 - Fincantieri, an Italian shipbuilder, held a ceremony to cut steel for the second of two FREMM “EVOLUTION” (FREMM EVO) frigates for the Italian Navy, reported Naval News.
The new ships match the hull and propulsion of the old FREMMs but can accommodate combat and platform systems of the latest generation vessels made under Italian Naval Law. They also have new systems for missions and threats, Naval News reported.
Naval News reported the first FREMM EVO ship for the Italian Navy began production in July 2025, with delivery for both ships scheduled for 2029 and 2030, respectively. The Portuguese Navy is also under contract to get three FREMM EVOs between 2029 and 2030.
