First Phase of Carbon Capture Trial Successful at ArcelorMittal Gent

The companies said the pilot-scale first phase of the trial captured CO2 at rates over 90% and provided operational and engineering data to assess the potential for full-scale application of the technology.

“The campaign has demonstrated the ability of the Advanced KM CDR Process to operate under challenging blast furnace gas conditions, including the presence of dust, sulfur-containing compounds and other impurities, while generating the data to support the assessment for future commercial-scale design,” said Tatsuto Nagayasu, senior vice president and head of CCUS at MHI.

Based on the trial results, applying this technology at full scale to the precombustion blast furnace offgas could reduce CO2 at the Gent site by about 24%. They estimate applying it across multiple emission points could progress toward zero emissions.

The second phase will apply the technology to multiple emission points of the steelmaking process, including gases from the hot strip mill reheating furnace, the companies said.
