Fives Installs Oxygen System on Billet Reheating Furnace
05/20/2025 - Fives announced it has successfully completed its first PREMIX oxygen enrichment project on an existing billet reheating furnace at MEGASA Group’s rebar production plant SN Maia Siderurgia Nacional in Maia, Portugal.
Fives said its subsidiary, Fives Steel Spain, was entrusted with the project after they had previously modified the combustion system of the same furnace. They developed PREMIXTM technology, which injects additional oxygen into the combustion air duct upstream of the burners. The company estimates oxygen levels were increased to 25% with about 6% fuel savings.
“By introducing additional oxygen, we are improving combustion, which allows for higher temperatures without increasing fuel usage, contributing to both cost savings and reduced CO2 emissions,” said Oiane Gerrikagoitia, research and development manager and thermal process technical expert at Fives Steel Spain.
The companies said their partnership was positive and collaborative, with a key factor being implementation of pre-assembled technology to minimize operational downtime.
“We were able to perform the majority of the installation while the furnace was still running, ensuring that production continued smoothly and without significant delays,” said Koldobika Tafalla González, services and technical expertise director at Fives Steel Spain.
