Ground Broken for New Steel Processing Facility
10/17/2022 - Kentucky officials helped break ground Wednesday on a planned steel processing plant that will produce advanced high-strength material for the military.
According to the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development, the Flash Steelworks facility represents a US$12.1 million investment that could create as many as 250 full-time jobs.
Located in Middlesboro, the facility will utilize the flash bainite process developed by Flash Steelworks founder and chief technical officer Gary Cola Jr. It uses a proprietary heating and cooling process that can imbue advanced high-strength steel properties to ordinary carbon steel.
The facility will make lightweight blast-resistant plate for the Department of Defense.
“Flash Steelworks is very pleased to team with everyone in the State of Kentucky to produce a world-class armor plate to protect those in harm’s way,” said Cola.
“Starting in Middlesboro, we will deploy leading-edge advanced steel technology and products in what is planned to be a regional industrial hub. This new facility is just a first step toward bringing many truly high-paying, long-term jobs to Southeast Kentucky to the benefit of all.”
