GSCC: Certified Steel Producers Reduce Emissions
09/09/2026 - The Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC) announced today that nine of its certified steel producer members combined avoided over 32.5 million metric tons of CO2e emissions between 2023 and 2025.
Under the Steel Climate Standard methodology, the original four certified companies avoided about 2.3 million metric tons of CO2e emissions between 2023 to 2024; all nine companies avoided about 10.8 million metric tons between 2024 to 2025.
“More than 32.5 million tons of avoided emissions are evidence that measurable progress is happening today. What is equally important is how our members are achieving it. They are not following a single prescribed technology pathway. They are making investments and operational decisions appropriate for their facilities while being held to the same rigorous requirements for emissions measurement, verification and long-term reductions,” said Adina Adler, executive director of GSCC.
GSCC said that the Steel Climate Standard recognizes that global steel producers face varying starting points for decarbonization while establishing a common expectation for emissions performance. It measures actual emissions instead of a specific production route with a technology-neutral framework.
“Technology neutrality does not lower the bar for decarbonization. It sets the bar based on emissions performance. As carbon intensity increasingly influences trade, procurement and investment decisions, the ability to demonstrate real reductions through transparent, independently verified data will only become more important,” Adler continued.
The standard supports the Paris Agreement’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
