India Plans New Steel Policy With Increased Capacity, Lower Emissions, Better Access to Raw Materials
09/30/2026 - India’s steel secretary said the country’s steel ministry has drafted a steel policy road map for the next two decades of steelmaking that would see capacity raise to 600 million metric tons, cut emissions and increase access to key raw materials, Reuters reported.
The policy would see carbon emissions cut to around 1.54 metric tons of CO2 per metric ton of crude steel by 2047. With increased iron ore and coking coal demand, the steel ministry plans to secure access to reserves through foreign assets and joint ventures, Reuters reported.
