Industeel Belgium Turns to SMS group for Green Walking Beam Furnace Upgrade
10/21/2025 - Steel plate producer Industeel Belgium, part of the ArcelorMittal Group, has turned to SMS group for a sustainable upgrade of the walking beam furnace at its plate mill in Charleroi, Belgium.
The walking beam furnace, originally installed in 1969, will be modernized to reduce carbon emissions for about 25% lower fossil fuel consumption.
The scope of supply includes a complete relining of the furnace box, installation of a high-performance heat recuperator and integration of SMS’s RADFlame HY2 burners, flat flame roof burners and X-Pact Prometheus, the company said.
Operation with both natural gas and up to 70% hydrogen will be possible due to SMS’s RADFlame HY2 roof burners. In addition to reduced CO2 emissions, the system will cut fossil fuel consumption and lower nitrogen oxide emissions to less than 65 parts per million.
The heat recuperator will preheat combustion air and refractory materials in the furnace box for optimized fossil fuel savings. The X-Pact Prometheus combustion control system will ensure control of the heating process for reduced energy waste and better performance.
SMS said it has tailored the technical solutions to meet Industeel’s requirements, utilizing advanced 3D design tools and a detailed 3D scan of the existing installation to prepare the revamp and avoid interference with existing equipment.
The companies said the modernization is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2026. The process of dismantling the existing furnace and installing the upgraded system will occur over a 6-week summer outage to minimize disruption to production.
