JFE Steel to Boost Coal Output in Australia

JFE Steel Corp. and JFE Shoji Trade Corp. announced in a published release that they have agreed with their joint venture partners to expand production at the Carborough Downs coal mine in Queensland, Australia.

Together the companies will spend 400 million Australian dollars to boost annual coal output at the mine to 3.7 million tonnes from its present level of slightly less than one million tonnes.

The mine is owned 80% by Brazil's Companhia Vale do Rio Doce, 2.5% each by JFE Steel and JFE Shoji Trade, and 5% each by Nippon Steel Corp., South Korean steelmaker Posco, and Tata Steel of India.
