JFE Steel to Resume Operation of Fukuyama Blast Furnace

JFE Steel Corp. expects to complete the revamp of No.3 Blast Furnace at the company’s West Japan Works (Fukuyama), with the blowing in for a fourth campaign to begin around May 14.
 
The revamp, which began in January, included an expansion of the inner volume to 4,300 m3 from its current 3,223 m3. It represents an investment of 2.90 million yen.
 
Resumption of operations for the No.3 Blast Furnace will enable JFE Steel to idle its No.2 blast furnace in Fukuyama for enhanced production efficiency. With the changes, crude-steel production capacity will rise to 13 million tonnes per annum at Fukuyama, and to 23 million tonnes in the larger West Japan Works. JFE Steel’s total capacity will rise to 33 million tonnes.
 
JFE Steel operates a total of six other blast furnaces in its West Japan Works — three in the Kurashiki District and three additional blast furnaces in the Fukuyama District
 
Kurashiki District
·         No. 2 BF (operating) — with an inner volume of 4,100 m3, this blast furnace was last blown in in November 2003 for its fourth campaign
·         No. 3 BF (operating) — with an inner volume of 5,055 m3, this blast furnace was last blown in February 2010 for its fourth campaign
·         No. 4 BF (operating) — with an inner volume of 5,005 m3, this blast furnace was last blown in January 2002 for its third campaign
 
Fukuyama District
·         No. 2 BF (operating) — with an inner volume of: 2,828 m3, this blast furnace was last blown in September 1998 for its fourth campaign
·         No. 3 BF (revamping) — with an inner volume of 3,223 m3, this blast furnace was last blown in August 1994 for its third campaign
·         No. 4 BF (operating) — with an inner volume of 5,000 m3, this blast furnace was last blown in May 2006 for its fourth campaign
·         No. 5 BF (operating) — with an inner volume of 5,500 m3, this blast furnace was last blown in March 2005 for its third campaign
 
Looking ahead, JFE Steel expects to capitalize on growing new demand, especially from Asia, as well as demand for stable supplies from domestic and other international customers. At the same time, the company will continue to optimize its blast furnace operational structure on a comprehensive basis to maximize production efficiency, costs and other key factors.
