Jindal: India's Capacity Goal Within Sight
06/16/2026 - Jindal Steel chairman Naveen Jindal predicted that India’s steelmaking capacity will reach its national goal and exceed 300 million metric tons of steelmaking capacity in less than 10 years.
Speaking during the 2026 Global Steel Dynamics Forum, Jindal said he believes India will hit that target in the next seven to eight years.
And it will need it, he said. The country’s 1.5 billion people consume about 109 kg of steel per person per year. That’s roughly half of the global average, he said.
“So we are very confident that in the next 20, 30 years there is going to be a lot of steel demand. We need to build a lot of houses, a lot bridges, and a lot of infrastructure. Steel is the backbone of India’s economic development.”
The Global Steel Dynamics Forum is taking place this week in New York City. Check back with AIST Steel News for updates.
