JSW Steel Issues FAC to SMS group for Second RH Plant
09/09/2025 - JSW Steel Ltd. has given the final acceptance certificate (FAC) to SMS group for the second 250-metric-ton Ruhrstahl Heraeus (RH) TOP plant at its Dolvi steelmaking shop 2 in Maharashtra, India.
The first RH-TOP unit was successfully commissioned in 2023. JSW Steel said the second unit will increase its capacity to produce high-purity steels for demanding industries worldwide. Some key strategic and operational advantages include improved steel quality, greater production flexibility and higher operational efficiency.
“By producing higher quality steel, we can strengthen our competitive position in both domestic and international markets,” said Subrata Dasgupta, senior vice president at JSW Steel.
JSW Steel’s RH plant has a multifunction TOP-Lance and is the first in India to have a dedicated ferrosilicon bunker at the vacuum lock. This allows them to produce non-oriented and grain-oriented electrical steel grades.
The ladle rocker can lift ladles up to 350 metric tons of liquid steel, a total weight of over 500 metric tons. It has a counterweight failsafe mechanism to ensure functionality even during power failures or defects in the hydraulic system, the company said.
“This project marks another milestone in the longstanding and successful relationship between JSW Steel and SMS group, who are also working together on several other projects at Dolvi Works,” said Matthias Oesterwind, senior project manager at SMS group.
Other projects the company will work on include a major expansion of Dolvi with a basic oxygen furnace (BOF) converter, a twin ladle furnace and a primary gas cleaning plant. SMS group will supply a new state-of-the-art blast furnace and CSP® Nexus (Compact Strip Production) for thin-slab casting and rolling.
The companies said commissioning is planned for 2026.
