Kilden Performing Arts Centre Voted 2011 Steel Construction of the Year

Ruukki reports that the Kilden Performing Arts Centre — for which the company was responsible for detail design, fabrication and installation of the steel structures — has been awarded the 2011 steel construction of the year award by The Finnish Constructional Steelwork Association (TRY).

Built in the city of Kristiansand in southern Norway, the Kilden Performing Arts Centre’s construction demonstrates an innovative combination of steel, wood and stone. The building’s façade features an undulating overhang on the seaward side that continues on the building’s inside ceiling. The building’s top section is supported by four inclined steel columns, each 25 meters apart. The façade has been clad with local oak.

"The compatibility of the structures made of different materials was taken into account when designing and manufacturing the steel structures. The demanding structural solutions required precise dimensional accuracy and prefabricated bolted joints were used for the joints. Design and realization of the support for the undulating façade posed a special challenge," said Sami Eronen, SVP Building Projects, Ruukki Construction.

While constructing the Kilden project, Ruukki utilized the Building Information Model (BIM) to update data from the different parties in real time. Ruukki generated information among other things about manufacture and transportation of the steel structures, and the site foreman updated work progress at the construction site. The information model could be used to show the structures and their joints in 3D at the construction site, which helped to accelerate progress of work.

Steel structures for the Kilden center were manufactured at Ruukki's plant in Peräseinäjoki, Finland, with deliveries beginning in October 2009 and ending in March 2010. Ruukki has experience in construction of other landmark cultural buildings in Norway, and Ruukki and AF Gruppen, the lead contractor for Kilden, also worked together on the Oslo Opera House. Ruukki was also involved in building the new concert hall in Stavanger, Norway.

Ruukki supplies metal-based components, systems and integrated systems to the construction and engineering industries, offering a wide selection of metal products and services. Rautaruukki has operations in 27 countries and employs 11,700 people, and its net sales in 2010 totaled EUR 2.4 billion. The corporation uses the marketing name Ruukki.
