Korean Steelmakers Recycle Nearly 100% of Metal Slag
03/30/2010 - About 99.8% of metal slag was recycled by Korean steelmakers last year, according to a report by the Korea Iron & Steel Association. Of the 16.7 million tonnes of slag produced in 2009, 16.67 million tonnes was recycled, surpassing the 95% target set by the government.
Korean steelmakers recycled about 99.8% of the metal slag they generated last year, according to a report by the Korea Iron & Steel Association. Of the 16.7 million tonnes of slag produced in 2009, 16.67 million tonnes was recycled, surpassing the 95% target set by the government.
By uses, all of the 8.86 million tonnes of blast furnace slag produced was recycled. About 76.4% was used as an ingredient for cement, followed by 4.8% for siliceous fertilizer and 0.3% for aggregate fill-up. A total of 7.83 million tonnes of steelmaking slag was produced last year, with 43.2% used for production of aggregate fill-up and 27.2% for roadwork.
This year, steelmakers are expected to contribute to reducing carbon dioxide emissions and speed up the development of technologies to expand uses of slag, including ways to use steel slag for marine purposes.
