Hertwich Engineering successfully commissioned its largest billet saw to date at Otto Fuchs KG, Meinerzhagen, Germany, in September.
Based on the CKS range of circular saws, this saw plant is designed to process cast billets with a diameter of 700 mm and up to 7 tonnes in weight. The saw blade measures 1920 mm in diameter and is powered by a 149-kW drive motor.
Cut lengths are between 200 and 2000 mm, besides test slices of 30 mm thickness. All cut pieces are automatically pin-marked and stacked into customer’s standard frames.
The bulk of the production is blocks of 400- to 2000-mm length, which are later forged into automotive and aerospace components. Shorter 200- to 400-mm blocks are cut as forging stock for alloy wheels.
Feed control is incorporated to limit the cutting feed to 380 A power. The cutting parameters for various alloys and billet diameters are stored in the data management system.
Hertwich Engineering GmbH in Austria is a company of the SMS group, which is, under the roof of the holding SMS GmbH, a group of companies internationally active in plant construction and mechanical engineering for the steel and nonferrous metals industry. It consists of two business areas: SMS Siemag and SMS Meer. In 2008, some 8900 employees worldwide generated a turnover of more than EUR 3.6 billion.
