Marcegaglia, Danieli Sign Agreement to Build New Green Steelmaking and Flat Rolling Facility

The companies said the plant will have an electric arc furnace (EAF), a single-strand continuous slab caster and a hot strip mill. The project will feature automation systems, optimal resource utilization and energy efficient technologies. They estimate there will be up to an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions due to the use of scrap, low-carbon hot briquetted iron, and nuclear and renewable energy sources.

The new plant will be able to produce about 2 million metric tons of liquid steel annually, along with 3 million metric tons of stainless and carbon steel hot-rolled coils per year. This makes up about 35% of Marcegaglia Group’s total coil and slab demand. The products will mostly supply the company’s Italian downstream facilities, they said.

The companies said the final investment decision is expected by the end of 2026.
