Mercedes-Benz Chooses SDI for Low-CO2 Steel
09/19/2023 - Steel Dynamics Inc. (SDI) will provide more than 50,000 metric tons of reduced-CO2 steel to Mercedes-Benz’s plant in Alabama under a newly signed procurement agreement, the automaker has announced.
In a statement, Mercedes-Benz said the steel will be made by SDI electric arc furnaces that run on fully renewable electric power.
“Our ambition is clear: Together with our partners we want to make our entire fleet of new vehicles net carbon-neutral along the entire value chain by 2039. Following this strategy, our agreement with SDI to procure more than 50,000 metric tons of CO2-reduced steel annually is another important milestone to establish a sustainable steel supply chain in North America,” said Gunnar Güthenke, head of procurement and supplier quality for Mercedes-Benz Cars.
