Mesabi Metallics Taps Midrex for DRI Component of New U.S. Steelmaking Complex
10/13/2026 - Mesabi Metallics announced it has chosen Midrex Technologies Inc. to supply the direct reduced iron (DRI) component of the integrated steelmaking complex it is building in Iowa.
The company said the DRI part of the project will use MIDREX FlexTM technology to produce hot direct reduced iron for direct feed to electric arc furnaces and hot briquetted iron.
“Pairing Midrex’s technology with our DR-grade Patriot Pellet from our mine in Minnesota is how we deliver the highest quality, lowest cost steel, with one of the lowest carbon footprints anywhere in the world. 100% American steel: mined, melted and poured,” said Joe Broking, chief executive officer of Mesabi Metallics.
The MIDREX Flex technology can operate with natural gas, hydrogen or a combination of both.
Midrex and the Essar Group have worked together for over three decades and built and operate six MIDREX DRI modules.
