Metal Park Prepares for Initial Meltdown of Galvanizing Kettle

The company said that it has received enough zinc to fulfill its material requirements. The facility will hold 610 metric tons of molten zinc at around 450°C and provide capacity to galvanize up to 150,000 metric tons of steel annually.

"Bringing 825 metric tons of zinc into KEZAD means the UAE's largest steel structures no longer have to be cut down or shipped away to be protected properly. That capability now sits inside one ecosystem, minutes from the fabricators who need it and close to Khalifa Port,” said Vahid Fouladkar, chief executive officer of Metal Park.

The 16.2 m kettle, said to be the largest in the UAE, is 2.5/2.0 m wide and 3.5 m deep with a double-dipping capacity of 5.5 m. It is designed for large beams, columns, transmission and lighting poles, bridge structures, telecom towers, port infrastructure and other major steelwork.

The company said the zinc will be brought to operating temperature over a few days. Once it’s molten, the kettle will be in continuous operation. The plant will use a lead-free zinc process, zinc recycling, fume treatment and heat recovery that has the capability to reduce fuel consumption by up to 30%.

Commissioning will continue throughout August with production expected to begin in September, the company said.
