Metinvest to Overhaul Hot Metal Mixer at Ilyich Steel BOF Plant

03/31/2011 - Metinvest is carrying out major overhaul of the 1300-tonne Mixer #3 at Ilyich I&SW’s LD Shop. The upgrade also will help to reduce unwanted inclusions in the molten metal by some 50 to 60%.

Metinvest is carrying out major overhaul of the 1300-tonne Mixer #3 at Ilyich I&SW’s LD Shop. The work is being carried out within the framework of the company’s continuous improvement program, reconstruction and modernization of its production enterprises.
 
Recent concentration with Metinvest Group allowed specialists to be brought in from other Metinvest enterprises for the first time. The major overhaul of the mixer will cost roughly UAH 6 million.
 
Modernization of Mixer #3 will ensure the timely preparation of hot metal and its supply to the converter at uniform, controlled temperature and homogenized chemical composition. According to the company, the upgrade also will help to reduce unwanted inclusions in the molten metal by some 50 to 60%, which will create conditions for significant reduction of expensive ferro-alloys consumption.
 
For three years Mixer #3 has processed over 4 million tonnes of iron, which is one of the best results among existing three similar mixers in the Shop. 
 
The major overhaul commenced in mid-March and will be completed ahead of schedule – within 26 days, vs. the initially planned duration of 31 days.
