Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum: All Federal Projects to Use Mexican Steel
04/30/2026 - Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum announced all federal work projects will use steel from Mexican companies following a failed attempt to reach a deal with the U.S. to reduce steel tariffs, reported Reuters.
“The commitment we are making here is that the government's purchases will be steel produced in Mexico,” said Sheinbaum during a press conference.
The U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) is currently under review, though U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Mexico’s auto and steel industries likely won’t have their sectors’ tariffs removed, Reuters reported.
