MMK’s Mill 5000 Surpasses One Million Tonnes of Product in 2010

Mill 5000, a hot-rolling unit of Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK), produced 1 million tonnes of hot-rolled plates since the beginning of 2010. From January to November 2010, the mill manufactured 1.048 million tonnes of hot-rolled products, including 117,900 tonnes of November output.

Mill 5000 is a key component of the plate-making complex, which, in addition to Mill 5000, includes secondary steel treatment unit and continuous slab casting machine No.6.

Nikolay Lyadov, Sales Director of MMK, said at the recently held Russia Metals Market 2010 Conference: “Mill 5000 has strengthened MMK’s foothold on the Russian market of rolled metal for pipemakers and secured MMK’s partaking in major oil-and-gas projects including Sakhalin-Khabarovsk-Vladivostok and Bovanenkovo-Ukhta gas mains and BTS-2 and VSTO oil pipelines.”

In November 2006, MMK contracted SMS-DEMAG to ship equipment and parts for the Mill 5000 designed to roll highly profitable plates with the high strength of up to X120 reaching 4850 mm by width. These MMK products are used in the oil-and-gas sector, shipbuilding, bridge engineering, and machine building industry. Mill 5000 annual capacity is around 1.5 million tonnes.
