Morgan to Upgrade Two Australian Mills

Seeking greater capacity and a more modern mill design, Smorgon Steel, now part of OneSteel in Melbourne, has contracted with Morgan Construction Co. to upgrade the bar mill and rod mill at its North Laverton facility in Australia.

Morgan will add equipment for the bar mill that will modernize and improve the slitting process, enabling both three-strand and two-strand slitting. Morgan’s scope includes the supply of two stands to replace existing stands that were originally manufactured by Morgan in 1923 for a previous owner. Morgan will also provide gear boxes, spindles, rest bars, and an air/oil lubrication system, as well as roll change equipment and spares.

The mill rolls a wide range of products including thread bar, rounds, rebar, flats and angles. Delivery will be in late June 2008.

In a separate contract, Morgan will also supply a new pinch roll and laying head for the rod mill to help improve productivity. The upgrade will result in better pattern and tail end control for the mill, which produces rod and rebar. The upgrade will also help the company increase rolling speeds to 100 meters per second. Delivery on this contract is expected on site in October 2008.

OneSteel, which completed its merger with Smorgon in mid-August, is the largest steel producer in Australia.
