New Zealand Steel Achieves First Green Steel Production on New EAF
08/10/2026 - New Zealand Steel announced today that it has successfully produced its first green steel products on the new electric arc furnace (EAF) at Glenbrook steelworks.
The company said the new EAF will cut its facility’s greenhouse gas emissions by over 45%. The first heat comes two years after breaking ground on the project to replace Glenbrook’s oxygen steelmaking furnace and two of the four coal-fueled kilns.
“We've produced the first heat just over two years after breaking ground and been able to undertake this significant business transition within a fully operational steelworks, continuing to produce the usual 650,000 metric tons of steel to ensure uninterrupted supply to the domestic sectors that rely on it,” said Robin Davies, chief executive officer of Australia and New Zealand at New Zealand Steel.
New Zealand Steel’s sister company Pacific Steel will offer the green steel onto the market later this year under the brand names PACIFIC™ and PACIFIC DCRB®.
