Nippon Steel Reports on Impact of Tohoku Pacific Earthquake

Nippon Steel reported on the earthquake’s effects on company facilities, and the countermeasures the company has taken as of March 13, 2011. The company emphasized that its utmost concern has been the safety of all the employees and employee families of Nippon Steel and its group companies and related companies. The company said it continues to try to confirm their safety.

Kamaishi Steelworks — Some facilities of Kamaishi Steelworks were inundated by Tsunami and have been out of operation. The Kamaishi Steelworks port facilities have been damaged, and recovery efforts are now underway.
 
Until it achieves full recovery at Kamaishi Steelworks, the company said that it intends to continue to supply steel products to customers through production at other steelworks and Nippon Steel group companies.

Kimitsu Steelworks — The company reports that Kimitsu Works has resumed the blast furnace operation, which had been temporarily suspended. Following the restart of the iron and steel making processes, Kimitsu Steelworks is resuming operation of the rolling processes.

Muroran Steelworks — Muroran Steelworks did not sustain severe damage to its facilities.

All the steelworks except Kamaishi — All the steelworks had originally suspended product shipment because of the Tsunami. Since the Tsunami warning was lifted by the Japanese government, all the steelworks except Kamaishi are resuming their shipments.

Nippon Steel said that it and its group companies intend to focus their resources on the reconstruction of its regional communities in cooperation with local governments.
 
The company extends heartfelt sympathy and deepest condolences to the people who have suffered from the Tohoku Pacific Earthquake and sincerely hopes for their earliest recovery. The company also expressed gratitude for the sympathy extended since the earthquake took place last week.
