NLMK to Introduce Auxiliary Equipment for Hot Strip Mill

Novolipetsk Steel has concluded a €2.3 million contract with Sytco a.g. (Switzerland) for the supply of a new roll-grinding machine for special grinding and proper roll surface profiling for its 5 million tonnes-per-annum capacity hot strip mill.

This installation at NLMK’s main production site in Lipetsk will reportedly improve hot-rolled strip quality by 75% and improve the geometric parameters of the strip, both its flatness and thickness deviation. The company will also be able to produce up to an additional 50,000 tonnes per annum of hot-rolled strip due to lower roll wear and fewer scheduled shutdowns.

NLMK plans to install the mill-revamping equipment in Q1 2012 as part of the second stage of its Technical Upgrade Program. Two machines currently are used for special grinding to ensure the required profile of mill rolls for the hot strip mill; an additional machine will be able to perform this operation following its reconstruction.

The main objectives of Stage II of NLMK's Technical Upgrade Program for 2007 to 2012 include increasing Group steel production capacity by 40% to 17 million tonnes per annum, including from 9 to 12.4 million tonnes at the Lipetsk site; and increasing finished product output from 8.9 to 10.7 million tonnes per annum due to revamping and construction of new rolling facilities producing finished flats.

Novolipetsk Steel (NLMK) is a world-class steel producer with operations spanning mining, steelmaking, and rolling. Its main production facilities in Lipetsk, in the center of European Russia, are within 350 km of Stoilensky, its main iron ore supplier, and close to key Russian customers and major transport routes. The company produced 10.5 million tonnes of steel in 2009.
